Osasuna had a huge success last night. After a hard fought battle at San Mamés, they beat Athletic Club in extra time and will play in the Copa del Rey final for only the second time in their history.
Osasuna took a one-goal lead from their home semi-final at El Sadar Stadium. There were fears, however, that it would not be enough in Bilbao, as the atmosphere at San Mamés was boisterous.
And in the beginning, it was true, Athletic pounced on their opponents in the rematch, with Iñaki Wiliams opening the scoring in the 33rd minute. In the second half, the Basques could have ended the game, but Nico Wiliams missed two great chances.
The game went into extra time, where Osasuna continued to hold out until the 116th minute. Jon Moncayola sent a centre to the edge of the box, where Pablo Ibáñez set up a cross and headed it just wide of the post.
It sent the visiting team into a huge euphoria. In the rest of the match, the Rojillos kept the lead and reached the final, where they will face one of the Real Madrid/Barcelona pair.
Osasuna are having a dream season. They have already knocked out Betis and Sevilla, traditionally strong teams in the cup, and now they have knocked out another cup team from Bilbao. It has not only secured the final in Seville’s La Cartuja stadium, but also the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia next January.
Thus, upon returning to Pamplona, the fans euphorically welcomed the Osasuna players, regardless of the time. Indeed, Chimy Avilla and co. did not return home until 3am and the celebrations continued for some time.
Osasuna are not doing badly in the league either. With 35 points they are ninth in the table, just two points behind seventh-placed Athletic.
