One step away from a seat in F1. Sargeant will become a Williams driver if he has a valid superlicence
Logan Sargeant got into the FW44 for the first time on home turf in Austin. Not even 24 hours have passed since then and already the young American has been promised a seat for next year.
Logan Sargeant got into the FW44 for the first time on home turf in Austin. Not even 24 hours have passed since then and already the young American has been promised a seat for next year.
The Williams Academy member’s arrival was announced by Jost Capito during a press conference before the third free practice session. He added that he is aware that Sargeant doesn’t have enough points on his superlicense, but he doesn’t see it as a major setback.
Indeed, the Carlin driver is currently third in the Formula 2 championship, which would give him the full forty points on his superlicence. Although Sargeant has seen a big drop in form, scoring just twenty points from the last ten races, Capito still believes that the young talent will secure third place in the last race of the season.
He will have forty points on his superlicence even if he finishes fifth in the championship standings. Fifth place is no easy task either, though, as the Formula 2 field is very evenly matched, with just 12 points separating third-placed Sargeant and seventh-placed Liam Lawson.
American fans will be watching the final two races of the F1 support series with anticipation, which will take place at Yas Marina at the end of November as part of the final Formula 1 race weekend.
Sargeant is expected to become the first American driver in the Queen of Motorsport since 2015. Alexander Rossi raced in the colours of the Marussia team back then.
The return of the American colours to F1 has been particularly praised by American drivers. IndyCar driver Conor Daly tweeted the youngster as a great representation of the stars and stripes.
This news means, among other things, that there is one last seat left open for next season. Mick Schumacher will try to defend it. Antonio Giovinazzi and Nico Hülkenberg are also likely to fight for that last seat in Haas.
