One more win! Tomas Machac is one step away from his debut at Wimbledon
The main competition at Wimbledon starts in four days and four Czech tennis players were competing in the qualifying rounds. Successful Wednesday
In the second round of the qualification for the legendary Wimbledon, Tomas Machac faced the Japanese Uchida. The even first set was decided in the tenth game, when the Czech player lost his serve for the first time in the match and lost the opening set 4:6.
From that moment on, however, the favourite from Beroun did not falter in his serve and dominated the rest of the match. In both the following sets he won the Japanese’s serve twice and advanced to the final match for the third Grand Slam of the season.
Unlike the other majors, he hasn’t played in that one yet. He came close two years ago when he finished in the final qualifying match.
The deciding match of the qualification
Machac’s opponent in the final qualifying match will be Lucas Pouille. He is a former world No. 10 and his career has gone through a wild evolution. Depression and alcohol abuse were also part of it. Now the twenty-nine year old is on his way up and he proved it at Roland Garros, where he made it all the way from qualifying to the second round of the main event.
Given Thursday’s duel, the opening match of the Paris qualifier was particularly interesting. Pouille came up against Machac and won in two sets. The Czech player has an ideal opportunity for a rematch.
The performances of these opponents in the opening two qualifying matches slightly favour Macháč. The statistics reveal a higher first serve success rate, a higher number of aces per game and far fewer double faults on the Czech player’s side.
Also this year’s results, especially on faster surfaces, speak in favour of the Czech. On the other hand, Pouille has already played six times in the main event at the All England Club and in 2016 he even went through the top eight.
The deciding match for Machac’s participation at this year’s Wimbledon will start today, Thursday, June 29 at noon CET.
