For the second time after a five-year break, a full-fledged golf tournament of the best players in the world was played under five rings. However, the course at Kasumigaseki Country Club did not offer golfers the warmest of welcomes. Due to thunderstorms, the first round had to be suspended for an hour and a half. The scheduled break also affected our only representative.
Ondřej Lieser took to the course in the first round of the Olympic tournament only in the last fligh. Before the tournament he promised to concentrate on every shot.
Especially the first nine was played very calmly by the Czech player. He even made a birdie on hole number seven for three pars. As the storm approached, a little nervousness seemed to settle on Lieser’s hand. He made a bogey on the tenth hole before heading to the clubhouse with the other players on the course due to the inclement weather.
When he returned to the course, it was a see-saw affair. He played a second bogey on the twelfth hole, which he took back on the fifteenth. On the last four holes, he alternated between birdie and bogey. In the end, Ondrej Lieser is +1 after the first round and is tied for forty-eighth.
Sepp Straka of Austria had the best opening round. He played a total of eight birdies, four evenly on both nines. With a score of -8, he leads the leaderboard. Just one shot behind him is Jazz Janewattananond from Thailand.
The leading pair can be considered as a surprise in the standings for now. The odds on them winning are around 170.
Only thirteen players finished in plus numbers in the first round. The second round starts at 0:30 CEST on Thursday night. If the weather is a bit wiser, we will know the complete standings in the morning.
