Goalkeeper Andre Onana will join his national team at the Africa Cup of Nations after a delay. He will still catch a match for Manchester United on Sunday.
Many Manchester United fans still can’t figure out his name, yet Andre Onana seems indispensable to coach Erik ten Hag. How else can you explain that he asked his number one to miss Cameroon’s first game at the Africa Cup of Nations. The information was reported by news agency Reuters.
The 20-time English champions have a home game against Tottenham on Sunday and the 27-year-old goalkeeper is expected to be in goal as he has been in all previous games of the current season.
However, that means he will not be able to feature in Cameroon’s game against Guinea on Monday. The coaches will be able to use the former Inter Milan and Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper in the next phase of the regular Group C. The Cameroonian Lions still have Senegal and Gambia to play at the championship, which is hosted by Ivory Coast.
Andre Onana quit the national team due to a row with his coach
Andre Onana rejoined the national team last September. He actually quit after the World Cup in Qatar due to a rift with coach Rigoberto Song. It must be added that the former great defender Song is still coaching Cameroon.
The question therefore remains whether Onana will even play for Cameroon in his second game after his arrival in Africa.
He has competitors in the team in the form of Devis Epassy of Saudi Abha, Simon Ngapandouetnbue of Olympique Marseille and Fabrice Ondoa of another French team Nimes.
Onana transferred to Manchester United from Inter Milan for over €50 million before the current season and despite occasional mistakes, he is the clear number one.
