The Czech national team has made no secret of its high ambitions for the ongoing Billie Jean King Cup. For the Czech Republic, the home environment is playing into their hands and they have the best that Czech women’s tennis has to offer in Prague.
But on Thursday they will face tough opponents from Switzerland. They gave the Germans no chance in their first group match and outclassed them 3:0 on match points.
Viktorija Golubic and Belinda Bencic played the singles for Switzerland. Both players managed their matches relatively calmly in the end, although Bencic had to turn her match around from an unfavourable 1: 0 set score.
In the following doubles match, the Swiss victory was crowned by the duo Golubic – Teichmann, who allowed their opponents only three games in the match.
The Czech Republic is not going to have an easy time of it, as the captain Petr Pála knows. “It’s a great team. It will be evenly matched and decided by a few balls,” Pála judged.
Barbora Krejčíková and Marketa Vondroušová are expected to play singles again for the Czech team. Although Krejčíková was not fully fit on Monday, she should actually start Thursday’s duel after consulting with the doctors.
“She is ready. We talked with the doctors and Bára herself said so, so I don’t see any obstacle why she can’t start,” confirmed captain Pála.
