As the European Championship qualifying groups are coming to a close in Germany, Michael Olise has transferred from Crystal Palace to Bayern Munich. The French 22-year-old winger cost the Bavarian big club nearly 50 million euros, which will probably cause some departures from the club. The Frenchman will be the first ever reinforcement for Vincent Kompany in his role as Bayern coach.

Olise started out in England

Olise is an Arsenal product, where he spent the first part of his career. However, at the age of 8 he decided to swap the red part of London for the blue and headed to Chelsea’s academy. In order to keep the fans from getting even more confused, at the age of 15 he transferred to Manachester City’s academy, where his journey to the big clubs ended.

The Frenchman got his first sniff at adult football at the age of 18 for Reading. In the 2019/20 season, he jumped into 4 games across the English cups to record his opening starts. Unfortunately, he didn’t register a goal or an assist in either game.

The 2020/21 season was already 100% better for Olise. The French winger played 44 games in the Championship for Reading. In addition, he scored a brilliant 7 goals and 12 assists in the season, making him one of the most productive players in the entire competition. At the time, Olise was 19 years old and earned a transfer to Crystal Palace for less than 10 million euros.

In his inaugural season in the Premier League, the French winger notched 2 goals and 5 assists in the 26 games he intervened in. He added another 2 goals and 3 assists in 5 FA Cup matches, in which Crystal Palace reached the semi-finals. The following season was even better, with 2 goals and 11 assists in 37 games, making Olise one of the best playmakers in the competition.

In the still ongoing season, the Frenchman was supposed to be Crystal Palace’s biggest weapon. However, a series of injuries allowed him to play in only 19 games. However, in those games he was one of the best the competition had to offer, 10 goals and 6 assists speak for themselves. It was through great performances that Olise deserved a big transfer.

A great transfer for Bayern, if..

Bayern have been lacking productive wingers this season. Leroy Sané had a great start to the season, but after the opening period his influence on the game disappeared and he became a mere shadow of himself. For the rest of the season, he looked jaded to the point of laziness. Kingley Coman is still injured and management can’t rely on him.

Serge Gnabry also seems to have disappeared. So Olise comes in as the saviour of the wing spaces. The price is agreed at 45 million euros and another 5 million in bonuses. This is a big sum for the German club, there will have to be departures.
