Manchester United have officially confirmed the expected decision, as reported by The Sun on Saturday. Mason Greenwood will no longer continue at the club. The English club is thus losing one of the greatest talents it has had in recent years.
A short while ago, Manchester United issued the following statement on their website:
“Our process was initiated in February 2023 after all charges against Mason were dropped. Throughout the process, we have taken into account the wishes, rights and perspective of the alleged victim, along with the values of the club, and have sought to gather as much information and context as possible. This has required us to be sensitive and careful in obtaining evidence that is not publicly available, including evidence from people with direct knowledge of the case.
On the basis of the evidence before us, we concluded that the material published on the internet did not provide a complete picture and that Mason had not committed the offences in relation to which he was originally charged. However, as Mason has now publicly admitted, he made mistakes for which he accepts responsibility.
Everyone involved, including Mason, is aware of the difficulties involved in resuming his Manchester United career. It was therefore mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”
Greenwood last played in the 2021/22 season and only until February. At such a young age, the 181cm tall striker has already played 129 games for the Red Devils and scored 35 goals. He even made his debut for the England national team.
As far as possible destinations are concerned, there have been reports of a transfer to Italy or Turkey. More specific speculation then talked directly about Atalanta, which apparently was linked and quite possibly discussed because of the now Red Devils striker Rasmus Hojlund, who moved to Old Trafford not long ago.
Moreover, the question remains how much this whole affair and the fact that he hasn’t played for a few months, which is very devastating at his age, will affect Greenwood.
Still, we are talking about an excellent player who was very goal-scoring when he played for Manchester United. However, with his reputation, it won’t be easy to find an engagement, so it will be interesting to see which club reaches out for him.
