Ødegaard scored a wonderful goal to secure Arsenal’s win, Vydra didn’t help Burnley either

Burnley and Arsenal played against each other in the 5th round of the Premier League. Burnley had a nice stats in the games against the London team, as Arsenal couldn’t beat them for over two years. Today was the moment when Arsenal broke this bad streak and managed to win.

Neither Arsenal nor Burnley had a good start to this season, yet the Canaries were the favourites for the match. After three opening losses and one win, they wanted to add three more points to their account. Burnley had only one point after 4 rounds.

Arsenal’s chance came in the 6th minute when Tierney got into the box and put the ball in front of the net. Pepe was there but failed to process the ball and hit the post from close range.

After about half an hour, Saka took the ball and ran across the middle of the pitch with it towards goal, but was fouled just outside the whitewash. This was followed by a direct kick, which Martin Ødegaard took. He hit a beautiful shot and Arsenal went 1-0 up.

The first half was played at a moderately slow pace, with neither team trying to take more of the action to their side. Most of the time it was played around the whitewash, but there were no big chances.

At the start of the second half, Burnley took care of some activity. There was some confusion inside the Arsenal penalty area, Burnley produced a couple of shots which were blocked by the Arsenal defence, the players also demanded a handball and a penalty, but the referee didn’t oblige them on this one. Cornet had a great chance, and found himself all alone in the Arsenal whitewash, but his hard shot was cleared for a corner by goalkeeper Ramsdale.

In the 57th minute, Czech striker Matěj Vydra got on the pitch. After ten minutes of Vydra being on the pitch, Arsenal’s Gabriel sent a slow pass to the goalkeeper which Vydra intercepted and then fell in the whitewash after contact with Ramsdale. The whole situation was examined by VAR, who ruled that a penalty would not be whistled because Ramsdale played the ball before it touched Vydra.

For the rest of the game Arsenal defended a narrow one-goal lead, which they did not lose as they did not allow anything significant to Burnley players. Mikel Arteta’s charges notched their second win in a row. They won the previous game against Norwich 1-0.

Arsenal will play their next game on Wednesday in the EFL Cup against Wimbledon, where they will be huge favourites. Burnley will also be favourites in their next EFL Cup match, they will play Rochdale a day before Arsenal play their match.
