Oktagon announced Thursday evening not very good news for the fans of the organization. Jonas Magard will not be able to defend his title against Filip Mack due to injury.
We won’t be losing him, however. The organization has found a replacement for the Danish shark who is certainly no slouch. He comes after a stint in the UFC.
The organization’s announcement
“Danish “Shark” Jonas Magard has a broken jaw after yesterday’s training session and his challenger Filip Macek gets a new opponent. “Macek will go up against former UFC fighter Gustavo Lopez in the interim title fight,” commented the organization’s promoter Ondrej Novotny on the situation.
Filip Macek, the reigning bantamweight champion, has had a successful year. He won by first round submission against Ramon Martinez in April and against Silander at the Szczecin Arena, showing the fans that he is back on top and challenging for a title fight.
But he’s not going to have it easy in the fight for the opening belt. His new opponent will be a thirty-three year old native of the small town of Wapato, which is about a 2.5 hour drive from Seattle. He holds a respectable 12-6-1 record among the pros and has been in the UFC since 2020, where he has had four fights.
And fans definitely have something to look forward to. Aside from being a complex and tough fighter on the ground and in the standup, the 165cm tall fighter’s fights have a lot of pizzazz. 11 of his 12 wins have come before the limit, including 5 by knockout and 6 by submission.
Lopez has had a full training camp, he was already preparing for the UFC tournament on 12/17 and was ready to jump in, which ultimately didn’t happen. As well as another title fight he had lined up in another American organization.
“At the moment I can’t say if Jonas will go for the title in his next fight, it depends on the length of his recovery,” said the co-founder of Oktagon on the prospects of the Danish fighter.
“If he recovers quickly, then yes, the possibility is there, otherwise someone else who deserves it will get the chance,” he added.
