According to overseas media, William Nylander has agreed to a new contract with Toronto. The Swedish international extended his contract with his current employer for another eight years, earning a total of $92 million.
In our currency, Nylander will earn more than two billion crowns. That’s $11.5 million a year. Although the Maple Leafs have not yet officially confirmed the contract extension with their star, according to overseas journalists, only a few formalities remain.
Meanwhile, the 27-year-old forward has been given the biggest contract in franchise history. Well-known reporter Elliotte Friedman reports that the deal will of course start from next season. It also contains a non-exchange clause.
Compared to his current contract, the Swedish hockey player will be significantly better off. As reported by CapFriendly, Nylander is finalizing a six-year contract this year, which was set to cost $45 million.
After this season, he would become an unrestricted free agent. On the one hand, it’s reassurance for Toronto that it won’t lose one of its biggest stars. But on the other hand, it brings a big salary cap problem to the Maple Leafs.
Nylander at the expense of others?
Because the Canadian team already has no room under the salary cap. And that’s a problem, of course. Why? Because several other players are also out of contract at the end of this season. Among them are Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, TJ Brodie, Mark Giordano and goalie Martin Jones.
And for perspective – John Tavares, Mitchell Marner and Auston Matthews alone are already taking up over 30 million. So it’s more than clear that there simply has to be a trade after this season. And that’s another reason why an already star-studded Toronto needs success in the playoffs.
Nylander, who was drafted eighth overall by the Maple Leafs in 2014, scored 198 goals and recorded 484 points in 558 regular season games.
