The iconic La Bombonera may be coming to an end. Indeed, Boca Juniors’ new presidential candidate Jorge Reale is planning to build a luxurious new stadium with a capacity of 112,000 spectators, which would help solve the problem of the lack of seats for the club’s socios.
At the end of 2023, elections will be held for the new president of Argentina’s big club Boca Juniors. One of the candidates is Jorge Reale, who wants to take the “throne” with his idea.
The successful businessman is proposing to build a brand new stadium on Isla Demarchi, about one kilometre from the current Bombonera.
The current La Bombonera is iconic and part of the club’s identity, but the problem of few seats is becoming an issue. Boca Juniors is counting on 315,000 socios, that is, club members. However, only 59,000 will be able to get into the stadium.
“A few days before our club’s birthday, it is my pleasure to share with you the project of a new stadium with twice the capacity so that all members can go to the stadium,” Reale said on his Twitter account.
La Nueva Bombonera would have a capacity of 112,000, 444 VIP areas and perhaps 4,000 parking spaces. The current Bombonera would continue to serve as a stadium for women and youth categories.
“With La Nueva Bombonera, we are staying in our neighborhood that identifies us so much, and we are addressing not only the issue of capacity, but also a much bigger issue that the club has been facing for years:: member stickiness. All members should have the same right and the same opportunities to support the club they love,” explains Jorge Reale.
“If this dream comes true, we will not leave La Boca and we will keep our mythical Bombonera on its feet, we are the biggest in Argentina, we deserve it!” adds Reale.
