If anyone wasn’t happy with the overly relaxed atmosphere before and after Conor McGregor’s January fight with Dustin Poirier, they had to be happy now.
There was a lot of bad blood on the Irish fighter’s side, at least, before their third fight. This was confirmed at the press conference, where McGregor perhaps pushed the envelope a little too much and tried to escalate the atmosphere perhaps unnecessarily.
Poirier, moreover, looked like it had no effect on him. Neither did McGregor’s efforts to kick him. So it was a question of whether Poirier would keep his cool in the game.
Right from the moment both fighters entered the cage, the atmosphere in the arena was perfect and tense, and it only grew once the fight started.
McGregor didn’t start the fight badly at all, he tried to kick a lot and was active, even threatening a guillotine. But once Poirier got out of it and was on the ground in top position, he peppered the Irishman with hard punches.
Then once the fight went back to standing at the end of the first round, Poirier had the upper hand again.
In addition, McGregor badly injured his leg in the final seconds of the round and although he finished the round, he was unable to start the second.
The first round, however, was more of Poirier’s making the fight, not counting the opening minute. The American seemed to be in better shape and could have potentially won the fight even if McGregor hadn’t gotten hurt.
And would the bad blood have ended the fight? It didn’t. After the fight, they were at it again. Poirier talked about karma, McGregor again insulted not only Poirier, he again threw words at his wife. But it’s definitely not the end of him.
Why did Poirier say karma is not a bitch, but a mirror? McGregor said before the fight that the American would be taken away in a coffin. But in the end, it was he himself who couldn’t leave the cage on his own terms.
Poirier can now look forward to a title fight with Charles Oliveira. McGregor is going to have a long layoff.
