Not like that! Swiatek is furious, she will not play against the Czech Republic because of her demanding schedule
After the Billie Jean King Cup schedule was released, it was clear that the Czechs were not going to have it easy. In addition to the Americans, the fate of Petr Palá’s team has also awarded the Poles, for whom the current world number one Iga Swiateková plays. But there was a twist. Swiateková will not be going to Glasgow after all.
Swiatek is one of the main drivers of the Polish team, which overcame the Romanians in the qualification. The twenty-one year old was supposed to be the one to score important points for Poland in the singles in Glasgow. However, this will not happen.
The end of the season has a really busy schedule and there is an explanation for that. While the Masters Tournament, which will take place in Fort Worth, USA, is organised by the WTA, the final BJKC tournament in Glasgow is organised by the ITF. Yet the group stage of the BJKC starts just one day after the end of the Champions Tournament and the time difference between the two venues is 6 hours.
This time discrepancy between the two events is understandably not to the liking of Swiatek, who will be fighting for the top spot in the Champions Tournament, and she issued a statement on social media apologising for the BJKC and also complaining about the poor organisation of the calendar.
“I have thought a lot about it and discussed the whole thing with my team but I will not be available for the Billie Jean King Cup in Glasgow. I’mreally sorry because I play for Poland whenever possible and I always try to do my best,” expressed her regret.
“I am sorry that the tennis authorities were not able to agree on such a thing as a tournament calendar”. Swiatek is mainly referring to travelling around the world with little time between tournaments to acclimatise to a different time zone. ” I will talk to WTA and ITF representatives to change this, ” she added.
For the Polish team, Swiatek’s absence is a very noticeable setback as they play a very strong Czech team in their first match. Of course, it is also a loss for the organisers and the fans, for whom the young Polish star was a great attraction.
