Valuable scalps in 2023
There’s no such thing as a win. Beating a world-class opponent is always great. In any tournament and at any stage. Hungarian Marozsan knows this.
Two years ago, he was ranked as high as fourth in the ATP rankings. But last year, the Budapest native’s career took off.
In March he played two successful Challengers and with this bonus he could start appearing in ATP tournaments. And there, after just two months, he had a thunderous success.
At the prestigious Masters tournament in Rome, he went from qualification to the eighth round and during this journey he won an unprecedented scalp. The twenty-four year old Hungarian’s racket was finished off by the phenomenal Alcaraz.
The clay lover’s collection of scalps was still gaining lustre last year. By the end of the calendar year he managed to deal with Australian De Minaur and also Norwegian Ruud during the Chinese part of the tour.
In twelve months Marozsan climbed more than a hundred rungs of the rankings. At the beginning of this year, he is ranked in the top ten, making him the best Hungarian tennis player.
Marozsan in Australia
Marozsan starts the 2024 season in New Zealand. The tournament in Auckland here is the perfect opportunity to gain form and confidence ahead of the Australian Open. This year has welcomed some very interesting tennis players.
Thanks to the Hungarian fighter, their list is one name poorer. The Rafael Nadal admirer knocked out Gael Monfils right at the start of the tournament.
Marozsan stuck to the tried-and-true motto. Never stop believing! He was a break down in the deciding set. The French veteran was very close to advancing, but the Hungarian overpowered him, eventually winning the tiebreak.
The experience of the centre court is priceless. “It was amazing to play in front of all these people,” beamed Marozsan after his another big win. And another challenge lies ahead of him as he will face the tournament’s number one seed, American Shelton, in the next round. Will he add another valuable scalp?
