No way! Japan’s health fails again, another disappointment at the ATP tournament in Washington

The tournament in Washington is in full swing and most of the seeded players left very quickly. The elimination will not please any tennis player, but for some players the event in the US capital was particularly disappointing. For one of them, unfortunately, it didn’t even start.

The ATP 500-level tournament in Washington attracted many interesting players. Let’s mention for example the Canadian Auger Aliassim, the Briton Murray or the Japanese Nishikori.

It was the Japanese tennis player who planned to continue his gradual rise here. After all the problems that had befallen him in the past months, his performance was one of the expected events in the US capital.

But fate would have it otherwise. Before the start of the tournament, the health of the thirty-three-year-old tennis player decided again. “In the previous week I was bothered by pain in my left knee and after the last match the problem got a little worse,” explained the Japanese about his non-participation in the next ATP event.

The never-ending health problems again bring the question of whether Nishikori will be back at least close to the places he was used to. The Japanese tennis player was no higher than fourth in the ATP rankings.

Nishikori knows that health is absolutely essential for eventual success. He is also clear that bigger and more important tournaments are coming. But more players have experienced disappointment in the American capital.

Sebastian Korda

One of the top-seeded domestic players was definitely here to fix his appetite. Korda has not been doing well since his successful tournament at the Queen’s Club. He failed at Wimbledon, where he felt he was the favourite, and didn’t even make it past the first round in Washington.

He came close against Russia’s Shevchenko. He won the first set but failed to break the tiebreak in the second. In the deciding set, he missed a 4:2 lead and was again eliminated in the first round.

He is now one of the players who dropped out in the opening rounds of the tournament, alongside Auger Aliassim, Hurkacz of Poland and Bublik of Kazakhstan.

Who to watch

Gael Monfils, on the other hand, is showing great form and has not lost a set so far. The former world number six is also trying to make a comeback after health problems. So far, more successfully than Nishikori.

The two highest seeded players, the Americans Fritz and Tiafoe, continue. Bulgaria’s Dimitrov also confirms his excellent form this year. And let’s not forget the veteran Andy Murray. It didn’t quite work out on the Wimbledon grass, but the American concrete may bring more success for the Brit.
