Saliba a key player in Arsenal’s title chase
The surprise of this season almost happened in North London as Arsenal footballers occupied the top spot in the Premier League for most of the league season. However, the title celebrations did not take place in the end as the Gunners failed to make it through the last few games.
William Saliba also played an important role for most of the season. The young French defender spent last season on loan at Marseille, but this season he has become a cornerstone of Arsenal’s lineup.
He has built a great position and has become indispensable to the Gunners defence. This was evident when he got injured this season. He has missed Arsenal’s last 11 games in which Arsenal have not played as confidently as when Saliba came on in defence.
Saliba’s injury became fatal for the London outfit as he failed to finish the end of the season quietly. The title was eventually won by Manchester City.
PSG were interested in Saliba, but the player took a liking to London
After his great performances in the Premier League, it was no wonder that many other scouts began to circle around the young Frenchman. There was speculation about a transfer to Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain.
The Parisians were very interested in the French defender, but Arsenal didn’t want to let him go. Salib had the last year of his contract left, so the management of the London club started negotiations for an extension. That has now happened and so the transfer speculation can end.
Saliba has signed a four-year contract with Arsenal, so we will see him in London colours until 2027. The Frenchman will get a pay rise and as a bonus he has also got his favourite number 2, which he will wear on his jersey from next season.
Arsenal management has recently signed several key players to long-term contracts. In addition to Saliba, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Aaron Ramsdale have signed new contracts. They are negotiating further extensions with Martin Odegaard and Reiss Nelson.
