No hope and no regret? Manchester United have lost spirit, quality and confidence, says Arsene Wenger
Arséne Wenger spent many years as Arsenal coach. He has long watched Sir Alex Ferguson and his Manchester United dominate England. But that is ancient history. The Red Devils are not even a shadow of the club they were not so long ago. The former Gunners coach has had his say.

It was a different time when Sir Alex Ferguson was at the helm at Old Trafford. Manchester United reigned supreme in England, becoming the most successful English club in terms of league titles, winning the Champions League twice, for a long time the only English team to win the treble.
But that’s in the past. Since the legendary Scot retired from coaching the Red Devils have floundered. Several coaches have taken over as head coach, including Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho and David Moyes. But no one has succeeded Ferguson.
Things looked relatively promising last season. Erik ten Haag took over. At the beginning he was not very good, but then Manchester United took off and it looked like they would be fighting for the title in the new season. It’s not happening.
The team at Old Trafford is in a real mess. If Manchester United used to command respect, now they are more the butt of jokes. The Hag is under a lot of pressure, the players are facing criticism. What’s next? Even Arsene Wenger sees no hope.
Does Manchester United have any hope of improvement?
It is the best era in Red Devils history that Arséne Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson’s long-time rival and former Arsenal coach, has been watching from the sidelines. He spoke about the team, with whom the Gunners shared a giant rivalry, in an interview with beIN Sports.
Manchester United may pay their players the most of any Premier League club, but it doesn’t show on the pitch. Nothing. And while Manchester United are in decline, Manchester City are on a steep rise. The Citizens dominated their last game at the weekend, 3-0. At Old Trafford.
“The gap between the two teams grew wider and wider as the game progressed. In the end, I felt sorry for Manchester United. There is no hope in the team. I don’t see where they can improve. They have lost confidence, quality and spirit,” the Mirror quotes Wenger as saying.
“The whole team lacks confidence. The players don’t even ask for the ball, they don’t want it. If you ask how many players would make the starting line-up at Manchester City, the answer says it all. Usually you would say three or four players, which sums up United’s problem,” the Frenchman added.
Manchester United are now an abysmal 11 points behind the Premier League leaders. That, of course, is nothing that can’t be made up. But it’s certainly a major inconvenience. Moreover, the team is not doing well in the Champions League either.
