The tennis tournament in Vienna is in full swing. Six matches are scheduled for Wednesday, which promise an interesting spectacle. The duel between Nikoloz Basilashvili and Karen Khachanov should also bring that. Who will be the more successful in the sixth clash?
Nikoloz Basilashvili is currently 25th in the ATP rankings. Thanks to last week’s success, when he defeated Khachanov or Tsitsipas on his way to the Indian Wells final, he can still think about participating in the Tournament of Champions. So he will definitely not lack motivation.
In 2019, however, at the tournament in Vienna, which falls under the ATP Tour 500 category, he finished in the first round at the racket of Fernando Verdasco. However, this is not such a surprise, as the Georgian tennis player has won only 22 out of 47 matches in an indoor environment.
His opponent on Wednesday will be Italian Matteo Berrettini. The current world No. 7 is already guaranteed to start the Tournament of Champions, which was mainly due to his triumphs in Belgrade and later in London.
However, even the 25-year-old Italian does not have a positive indoor record. In his career so far, he has played 23 matches indoors, of which he has won only 11. He did not compete in the tournament in Vienna last year, which means he has no points to defend and can still move up in the rankings.
So what to bet on? Matteo Berrettini is the paper favourite for Wednesday’s event. However, neither player is completely comfortable in the hall, which could be a boon for Basilashvili. Moreover, he has already managed to surprise here once, when he sent home the Spaniard Carreno-Busta.
Matteo Berrettini, on the other hand, is more successful in the statistics of their matches. The two players have met five times so far, with the Italian tennis player winning three times. In the last three matches, Basilashvili played only one set. Berrettini should therefore confirm his role as the favourite and advance to the next round.
