Nick Kyrgios was supposed to be one of the favourites at the home Australian Open. But a knee injury forced him to withdraw from his beloved tournament. He then showed fans on his Instagram what the doctors found in his knee.
He had the season of his life. Kyrgios finally got his head on straight and started focusing more on tennis than everything else. He played a great match at his home Australian Open against the late world number one, Daniil Medvedev. In doubles, he and his partner Kokkinakis dominated the tournament.
At Wimbledon, he had a great performance and reached the final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. He reached the quarter-finals of the US Open.
While last year Kyrgios entered the Australian Open as the 115th ranked tennis player, this year he would enter the tournament as the 21st best tennis player on the planet and one of the favourites. But fate didn’t want it that way.
Kyrgios had to withdraw the day before the tournament due to a knee injury. Pain in his left knee would force him to undergo arthroscopy for a small tear and cyst in his lateral meniscus.
“I’m devastated I can’t participate in a tournament that was supposed to be one of the most important of my career. It’s abrutal blow,” Kyrgios sad at a press conference.
Kyrgios then posted on his Instagram what fluid the doctors pulled out of his knee. And it’s not a pretty sight.
So Kyrgios is facing an extended break. And given that he hates clay fiercely and regularly skips Rolland Garros, we might not see him at a Grand Slam until Wimbledon in the summer.
