Nice presented their latest signing ahead of Sunday’s game. This is midfielder Ross Barkley, who was a free agent after his contract at Chelsea ended. This allowed the French club to sign him after the end of the transfer window.

Several players arrived at Nice in the summer, most of whom have experience of Premier League football. The arrival of Aaron Ramsey after his contract at Juventus and Kasper Schmeichel, who unexpectedly left Leicester for many, were complemented by the guest appearance of Nicolas Pepe from Arsenal.

From England also came on loan, just before the transfer deadline, Joe Bryan from Fulham and Mads Bech Sörensen, who defended the colours of Brentford this season.

Before the match against Monaco, however, the French side unveiled one more signing. It is Ross Barkley, who finished his contract at Chelsea, thanks to which he became a free agent and could sign a contract after the end of the transfer deadline.

Midfielder Ross Barkley joins Nice as a free agent after spending four and a half years at Chelsea,” the French club said in a statement.

“Although the transfer window in France closed on Thursday evening, he was able to join us as he was without a contract,” the statement added.

Barkley arrived at Chelsea in the winter of 2018 as one of the biggest hopes in English football. However, he never managed to properly carve out a place in the team. He played most of the 2018/2019 season under Maurizio Sarri. He was sent on loan to Aston Villa for the 2020/2021 season. Last season, he only featured in six games for Chelsea in the Premier League, so it was no surprise that Chelsea parted ways with him.
