On Saturday night, the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers played a very European-friendly game. The NHL offered another great game, but what was most interesting was the brawl right at the start. Did we witness the best hockey battle of the year?
That fights in the NHL aren’t what they used to be? In the duel between the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers, we were able to confirm the opposite. It was a battle between seasoned tough guy Nicolas Deslauriers and rookie Matt Rempe.
The scoreboard read 0:0. At 3:00 into the first period, both players dropped the gloves and the battle was on.
Rempe had only been on the ice for nine seconds when the fight occurred. It’s worth noting that he’s only 21 years old. He’s only in his fourth game in the NHL. But even that didn’t stop him from taking on the 33-year-old tough guy on the Flyers.
The fight lasted 37 seconds. Both players exchanged a lot of hard hits, the frequency of blows was high. For a rookie in the competition, the youngster in a Rangers jersey did very solidly, giving his opponent nothing for free.
But it was Deslauriers who finally knocked his opponent down. Rempe, however, made a nice mark on his face. It was clear that the Flyers forward had not experienced the least difficult moments during his NHL career.
Has the NHL seen the fight of the year?
Video of the awesome brawl immediately started circulating on social media. Even more than the outcome is being discussed. It’s worth noting that the New York Rangers managed to beat Philadelphia 2-1. And guess who decided that.
Matt Rempe, of course, who scored his first NHL goal. He lost the fight, but won the game. Excellent finish. He scored the winning goal at 6:31 of the third period. So after the game, it was clear who was headed to the post-game interview.
In it, Rempe admitted, according to USA Today, that he and Deslauriers had agreed to fight before the game during warm-ups. The Flyers forward challenged the talented youngster. So once they were both on the ice, there was nothing to solve.
“We were handing out hard grenades. He’s a great warrior. I love it,” expressed the Rangers hero in a post-game interview.
