It was August 2017. Neymar wanted to step out of Lionel Messi’s shadow and increase his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or, and for a still hard to believe 222 million euros, French side PSG brought him into their ranks.
In the same year, Kylian Mbappé arrived in Paris on loan and was subsequently signed on a permanent transfer. He now threatened to leave for Real Madrid for free, but eventually extended his contract with PSG.
A year ago, the legendary Lionel Messi, winner of a record number of Ballons d’Or and one of the best, if not the best, footballer of all time, arrived at the Parc des Princes.
Together, this stellar trio should have terrified opposing defences. But it was only on paper. In fact, these stars haven’t played much together. Messi and Neymar were plagued by health problems throughout the season.
It is not very common with Messi, a repeat is not expected. Neymar, however, is a different case. In all the time he has been in Paris, he has never played more than 22 games in a league season, and he has only managed to do so this season.
In addition to his frequent injuries, the Brazilian has been criticized for his unstable performances, which has been confirmed again this season. And the club’s management has apparently run out of patience, even though Neymar himself has no plans to leave the club.
According to Goal, PSG will not resist selling Neymar. A new contract for Mbappe shouldn’t help either, as the good relationship between the two players is said to have waned and Mbappe shouldn’t mind Neymar’s departure.
There is loud talk of a possible return of Neymar to Barcelona. The Barcelona coach himself, Xavi, recently stated that he would like to have the Brazilian in his team. However, the Catalan giant will not be able to afford him. The only club that might be able to pay the required amount is believed to be Newcastle.
