Neymar moved to Saudi Arabia in the summer and for many people the transfer felt like a money-making departure. But what if the Brazilian had no choice? According to one of the French club’s staff, however, Neymar was tired of football in France.
Neymar at PSG
The Brazilian came to the club as the most expensive footballer in history. The French club activated Barcelona’s buyout clause worth 222 million euros. Frequent injuries aside, Neymar shone in Paris, at least from the sidelines. In his first season, he scored an impressive 28 goals and 16 assists in 30 starts for PSG.
However, he played 2 fewer games the following season. This led to a reduction of his stats to 23 goals and 13 assists. However, he was never able to repeat the numbers he achieved in his first two seasons. During the next 3 seasons in France, he never scored 20 or more goals again. In addition, the number of games he played each season decreased.
Relationship with Mbappé
Although the Mbappé – Neymar duo seemed very friendly from the beginning of their time together, the friendship faded over time. On the internet, we can find many collages of photos or videos in which the aforementioned pair appear very friendly, to the point of looking like best friends.
“In the beginning, Kylian liked Neymar a lot. However, after working with him every day for several years, his respect gradually diminished,” an employee of the Parisian big club told the Daily Mail. Neymar was not supposed to take training seriously, he was even supposed to arrive drunk at one of the training sessions.
The situation subsequently worsened with the arrival of Lionel Messi, who had a very close relationship with Neymar. According to the staff, both star players (Messi and Neymar) were offended that Mbappé was basically given the keys to the whole project.
However, as an introvert, the Argentine always said hello, unfortunately the same cannot be said for the Brazilian. After all, most of the players reportedly felt as if Neymar didn’t respect them.
The end at PSG
“After 2 or 3 really good seasons, I felt like Neymar wasn’t hungry anymore. He seemed overwhelmed with football, with money. He still had the motivation to play for the national team, but no longer against Brest, for example,” the staff member said.
Before the summer tour in Japan, Luis Enrique was supposed to have a dialogue with Neymar, telling him that he no longer counted on him. “Working together was no longer possible, it had to end like this. Neymar’s behaviour was not like before,” concludes a PSG employee.
