The UFC has released an epic trailer for the upcoming title rematch at the top of the welterweight division. Meanwhile, Jiri Prochazka has traveled to the United States to face his opponent. How did the first staredown and press conference of both fighters look like?
How was the first staredown between the two fighters?
A spectacular rematch between UFC greats is coming up. In just three weeks, Jiri Prochazka defends his welterweight championship belt at the last numbered UFC event of the year. The Moravian champion flew to the United States to fully acclimate to the environment there.
On his way to Las Vegas, he stopped in New York City for media duties. The two rivals faced each other and the fans were treated to a long-awaited staredown. There, the Brazilian attempted his first humorous trash talk, alluding to Jirka’s new hairstyle.
“You cut your hair and that’s how you lost your power,” the veteran Teixeira said to the Moravian samurai. “Or I took it back,” Procházka responded quickly, his championship belt slung over his shoulder.
Both men were attending a public press conference
Both fighters also took part in a public press conference where they answered questions from the journalists present. While Prochazka answered questions about the frequent anti-doping visits by USADA officials, Teixeira lamented the fifth round from their first clash against each other.
“Sometimes it’s tiring, sometimes I wake up at five in the morning and expect them to come again today,” the Moravian champion described the unpleasant situation. “But if that’s the price for being champion, I’ll gladly pay it,” he said.
“I showed only 20 percent of my skills, I want to show that I am much better in the stance and on the ground,” Procházka explained why he preferred the Brazilian to the other challengers. “I don’t want to rely on luck in the match, I have trained my skills on the ground and in the stance, but I don’t want to talk about it too much, I want to show it in the match,” he believes in his skills.
It was his opponent who regretted their previous match. He failed to hold a guillotine at the end of the fifth round and Procházka forced him to tap out with just half a minute left in the fight. “The guillotine was no mistake,” Teixeira said.
“The mistake was that I turned around there and didn’t realize that Jirka could try the choke, he was crafty and it worked,” he praised his opponent’s improvement on the ground. In doing so, he promised to make some minor adjustments in his wrestling training and this time he would go for the finish.
