The headliner of the 24th round of the Premier League will be the confrontation between Newcastle and Liverpool. The home side will go into the battle for a potential top four position in the table from a better position, what to expect from the match and what to bet on?
Newcastle are the only English team in the league to have lost only once so far, on the other hand they are the king of draws (11). They are still fourth in the table, but they have only a two-point lead on fifth-placed Tottenham with a game to spare.
Liverpool finally won a league game a week ago after five rounds, a 2-0 triumph in the city derby with Everton could kick-start it. They are now ninth in the table, nine points behind the Top 4 with a game to spare.
Newcastle’s key figures
Nick Pope is having a great season, the national goalkeeper has kept 12 clean sheets in the league, adding four in the cup. Brazilian Joelinton has four accurate shots and three goal assists.
Liverpool’s key figures
The Reds rely on Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah, author of 18 goals and seven assists. Eighteen-year-old midfielder Stefan Bajcetic was named man of the match against Everton, with Salah said to be the team’s best player since his Premier League debut.
What to expect and what to bet on?
Newcastle are backed by a solid defence that is the best in the league with 11 goals conceded. In the last seven games, the four-man black-and-white defence under Pop has conceded just three goals.
On the other hand, despite the bad winter season, Liverpool does not have bad offensive numbers, with 36 goals it has the best attack of the teams outside the top 6. However, it’s not going well away, it hasn’t won five games in a row away from Anfield.
Considering the improved atmosphere in the away camp after the derby win and the fact that Newcastle have only drawn in the last three rounds, I think Liverpool won’t lose at St. James’ Park.
