The Newcastle coach commented during his press conference on the situation surrounding striker Isak, who is struggling with a toe injury. “Alex is still struggling with a problem on his toe. He hasn’t trained yet so his start is not certain and we will decide on his participation just before the game,” Howe said.
Isak, who has scored in the last two home games against Manchester City, was given an injection to ease the pain but his condition worsened after the injection wore off. “His injury is not serious, but he has a broken thumb. If he can tolerate the pain, he can play without long-term effects,” the Newcastle coach added.
Improvement after Fulham defeat
Newcastle lost 1: 3 to Fulham last weekend, which led to much controversy. Howe acknowledged that the team’s performance was not good enough. “We did a thorough analysis and we took a lot from that to try and incorporate that into our game. We’ve had honest conversations this week and hopefully we’ll see the right response,” Howe said.
The coach also stressed that the team needs to show its true colours. “We have a responsibility to perform at our best. The players are honest with themselves and know that last week was not good enough. This internal reflection can be very useful“
Expectations for the Manchester City game
Ahead of the match against Manchester City, Howe stressed the importance of the upcoming game. “After the game we played against Fulham, the next game is extremely important. Everyone will be very motivated and if we inspire the fans they will support us,” said Howe.
Newcastle have played some good games against Manchester City in the past, especially on their home ground. “We did a lot of things right in our last home game, but City played hard until the last minute. We have to be fully focused for the whole 95 minutes and not let up for a second,” the coach warned .
Howe acknowledges that Manchester City are one of the top teams but stresses the need for courage in attack. “We have to be dangerous all the time and play bold with the ball. City have great players but we must not forget what we can do and that is the key.”
