Newcastle have to make a decision on the goalkeeper. De Gea, Lloris, or someone else?

Newcastle United have lost their number one goalkeeper. Nick Pope dislocated his shoulder earlier this month and the injury is worse than expected. The English goalkeeper will miss his team until April. Will Martin Dúbravka remain in the position of the current number one or will Newcastle bring in another goalkeeper?

Newcastle options

English newspapers are starting to speculate who could replace the Englishman in the Newcastle goal. For example, David de Gea, who has a lot of experience in the Premier League, is still a free agent. Hugo Lloris could also be on the list, who is not catching on at Tottenham after 13 years.

What kind of goalkeeper is Newcastle looking for?

Newcastle are struggling with the same problem Real Madrid faced when replacing Thibaut Courtois. A goalkeeper must have some quality, of course, as Newcastle fight for the top ranks in the Premier League. An experienced goalkeeper could be the ideal choice, he doesn’t cost too much money and will have no problem making the double behind Nick Pope.

David de Gea

The Spanish goalkeeper has been a free agent since the end of last season when his contract at Manchester United expired. There was speculation about his possible departure to Saudi Arabia, which eventually turned out to be the case, with the Spaniard reportedly turning down offers. After Courtois’ injury, de Gea was on Real Madrid’s radar. However, the high salary demanded by the Spanish goalkeeper became an issue.

The Spaniard is only 33 years old and offers tremendous quality to any team in the Premier League. The question remains, however, what kind of salary demands de Gea has. Moreover, it is uncertain whether he is keeping fit. For the Newcastle management, de Gea is the ideal choice, but the problem is the potential role of the number two when the English goalkeeper is back between the sticks.

However, he could only sign a six-month contract, which would allow him to bulk up and look for a new deal in the summer after showing he can still catch at the highest level.

Sam Johnstone

One of the options for the Newcastle management could be Crystal Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. The England goalkeeper celebrated his 30th birthday in March and has 5 clean sheets for Crystal Palace this Premier League season.

Moreover, his football career is very rich. Johnstone celebrated the title with Manchester United in the 2012/13 season, although he hardly got into any matches at all. He has Premier League experience to offer from Aston Villa, where he was a guest for many years just from United. After all, Johnstone has also captained West Brom and Newcastle’s owners might not even pay too much money for him.

Hugo Lloris

The French veteran is relegated to the bench by Vicario and it seems that the situation will not change by the end of his Tottenham engagement. He’s only under contract until the end of this season and would probably be the perfect fit for Newcastle as he offers experience and long-term quality. Plus, he will be very cheap.

Aaron Ramsdale

English newspaper DailyStar came up with the information that Aaron Ramsdale could be the replacement for Pop. The English goalkeeper is replaced by David Raya at Arsenal and will probably look for a new deal in January.
