Financial fair play is understood by very few football fans. That is why it is not surprising if most of them laugh at FFP rather than take the rule seriously.
Looking at PSG, it’s no wonder. So let’s take a look at how it is possible for Newcastle to spend £200m out of the blue in January. Waugh tried to explain this in an interview with Give me Sport, who have been looking into this issue surrounding FFP in detail.
“The £200m is not just £200m in terms of transfers. It doesn’t include the fact that if you sign a player for £40m on a five-year deal, on the books that’s basically £8m a year, so it actually means they can spend well over £200m if transfer fees can be set. So they have a lot of room to grow.”
Many are particularly concerned that Newcastle will once again significantly alter the transfer market, much like they did years ago when PSG brought in Neymar for 222 million euros.
Potential signings
In the English media, there is mainly speculation about a link with Barcelona, as the Spanish outfit got into big financial problems, however, they still have many great footballers who would need a fresh start.
Specifically, there is talk of a trio: Coutinho, Ousmane Dembélé or Samuel Umtiti.
There are also a number of other names being dropped, but as a new coach has not yet been announced, the names of players who are at a higher level, or at least have the potential to do so, than their current club is achieving are more likely to be mentioned.
However, there is no doubt that Newcastle will be significantly strengthened in January. After all, it needs them badly, as it is currently in the relegation zone.
