Newcastle and throwing money around? The Magpies are the exact opposite of PSG
It’s been more than a year since Newcastle United was bought by Saudi Prince Mohammed. Fans have celebrated his arrival, but at the same time, some of them feared that under his wing, the management would not throw the team away unnecessarily like PSG. But the opposite is true and Newcastle are showing how to be smart with such big money.
Immediately in the winter transfer window after taking over Newcastle, the merry-go-round began. The Magpies successively brought in Trippier, Burn, Guimaraes and Wood. Those expecting some extra big names didn’t get them. But apart from the last name, all the signings caught on and proved to be great buys.
Kieran Trippier in particular had many wondering. The England international played for the Spanish league title every year with Atlético Madrid and was a regular in the Champions League. However, the now thirty-two-year-old right-back knew what he was doing. He has become a key figure in a traditional team and this season he helped Newcastle to play in the millionaire competition for the first time in twenty years.
The club, which was almost hopelessly penultimate in the league, made it to a quiet mid-table position, and the very next season grabbed a brilliant fourth place. This was helped by two more signings – striker Alexander Isak and stopper Sven Botman.
The former played twenty-two league games despite injury, scoring ten goals. It should be added that apart from these goals, he also impressed with his technique and led his opponents as if on a string. The sum of EUR 70 million proved to be well spent.
Botman arrived from French Lille with the card of a talented stopper, who has been on the radar of top European teams for a long time. The Dutchman has strengthened the Black and Whites’ defence and has been instrumental in Newcastle conceding the fewest goals of any team in the league, along with Manchester City.
The Magpies will be competing in the Champions League next season after twenty long years, in which the ambitious owners will certainly not want to be left behind. Almost complete is the transfer of Sandro Tonali, who will move from AC Milan.
Other transfer targets include former Sparta player Dávid Hancko. Whoever Newcastle bring in next season will be interesting to watch.
