The year 2022 is over and it’s time for our annual review. Which player, team, coach or reinforcement deserves the “best” for the past year? Let’s take a look together.
Best team – Real Madrid
There can be no doubt here. Real Madrid won the Champions League in fantastic style in the spring, going past PSG, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool. What’s more, in the first three double matches, they had to turn the score around each time.
He also won the Spanish Super Cup at the beginning of the year and topped La Liga by a wide margin. In the autumn he did well too, winning the European Super Cup and equalling the club’s record for consecutive wins. No other club has won more trophies than Real (4).
Best player – Karim Benzema
Here too, we can’t help but pick the Ballon d’Or winner. Benzema was a terror in the spring, scoring a hat-trick against PSG and Chelsea, scoring the decisive goal in the rematch with the Blues, and scoring twice against City.
He didn’t play as much in the autumn due to injury, which also caused him to miss the World Cup. Still, he managed to score 5 goals in 7 La Liga games.
Best coach – Lionel Scaloni
It’s a bit difficult to compare club coaches with national team coaches – but Scaloni’s achievement is worthy of praise. The 44-year-old Lionel Scaloni won the World Cup as the fifth youngest coach in history and, most importantly, was the first to lead Argentina to a World Cup title with star Lionel Messi.
Best Young Player – Jude Bellingham
No, there really wasn’t a better youngster on the football lawns in 2022. Only Jamal Musiala could make a case, but Jude Bellingham was a cut above.
the 19-year-old Dortmund midfielder became an absolute leader for BVB, even wearing the captain’s armband in some games. Although his game is definitely not based on stats, he has scored 4 goals in 5 games in the Champions League, 2 goals in the cup and a 3+2 record in the league.
He also showed up at the World Cup, where apart from scoring his debut goal for England, he showed great performances. BVB have slapped a €150 million price tag on Bellingham for all comers.
Best transfer – Erling Haaland
Should there be another name here? Really? Absolutely not. Erling Haaland is without a doubt the best transfer of 2022, maybe of the whole decade. And not just because of the staggering number of goals, but especially because of the price-quality ratio, which is absolutely disproportionate. After all, the Citizens acquired one of the best players in the world for just 60 million euros!
And Haaland immediately started to show why he is the best transfer. In 13 PL games he scored 18 goals and added 3 assists. He also scored five times in four Champions League games. Monster.
