New stadium on the horizon? AC and Inter are already in contact with the mayor, but there’s a catch
Is that the green light for the new stadium? Italy’s San Siro is slowly but surely coming to the end of its run. A new home awaits AC Milan and Inter Milan in the future, with the clubs close to starting negotiations with the mayor.
Is that the green light for the new stadium? Italy’s San Siro is slowly but surely coming to the end of its run. A new home awaits AC Milan and Inter Milan in the future, with the clubs close to starting negotiations with the mayor.
Paolo Scaroni, the president of AC Milan, announced a few hours ago that renovating the current stadium is simply not possible, especially financially.
It was AC and Inter Milan who presented their plans for a new stadium, but as with most such projects, they ran into local authorities, politics and the intricacies of bureaucracy.
Indeed, some are opposed to the idea of demolishing the old stadium, which opened in 1926 and will make the football world a little poorer after its demolition. The majority of fans are also divided, with some wanting and looking forward to a new stadium.
For both Milanese giants, however, hope has dawned. Giuseppe Sala has been appointed mayor, and he supports the new project. He also confirmed that he was in contact with both clubs and was due to start negotiations with them soon.
On the Football Italia website we can find Scaroni’s extensive comments on the whole situation. “The new stadium is to stand next to the current one. The mayor approves of the project, but now he has to convince everyone else that this is the right step.
It is difficult for me to understand how the local authorities can think that we can renovate a stadium that hosts at least two matches a week. The stadium would be a total construction site in which the safety of our fans cannot be guaranteed.
There is no other stadium in which Milan and Inter could play during the reconstruction period. And the fact that it is a city with two European clubs means many more games played.
I hope people fully understand the importance of the new stadium. Because there is no point in being ambitious if we can’t count on the same income as other clubs. The teams we face in the Champions League earn €100 million a year from their stadiums, while we only collect €35.”
