New leader of the F2 championship Drugovich, Friday and Saturday were crashing

The Formula 2 season, like F1, resumed the week after the first race. But in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, it was more crashing than racing. Sadly, the unnecessarily dangerous nature of the track was confirmed. The championship is no longer led by Frenchman Pourchaire, who was replaced at the front by Brazilian Drugovich.

Qualification

Two incidents within three qualifying minutes spoke volumes in the battle for pole position. Firstly, it was a technical failure for then championship leader Théo Pourchaire, and then it was Logan Sargeant who recognised how close the walls were on the track in Jeddah.

Starting from first place, Felipe Drugovich finally and somewhat surprisingly took the pole position, the second of his career. Second place went to Bahrain sprint winner Richard Verschoor, with Jack Doohan finishing third. The latter, however, eventually started from the pits as he was disqualified from qualifying for not having enough fuel.

Sprint

Those who did not get to the sprint until the second half of the race did not lose anything crucial. In fact, Amaury Cordeel crashed on the very second lap, causing the Safety Car to exit. The race was about to start again on the run-up to lap seven, but Doohan hit Sargeant across the line and the Safety Car came out again.

And he stayed on the track for a really long time, as the race didn’t restart until lap 14. Liam Lawson was the first to finish, taking the championship lead in the process. Second place belonged to Jüri Vips, with Felipe Drugovich third. The MP Motorsport driver benefited from the disqualification of Jack Hughes, who failed the technical inspection.

The main race

the 27-lap race offered no crashes this time. As is common, drivers opted for different strategies as they were obliged to pit stop. A great pace was shown by the man starting from pole position, Felipe Drugovich. The Brazilian held his lead throughout the race and no one was able to get close to the MP Motorsport driver.

For Drugovich, this is the fourth career victory in F2. Richard Verschoor and Jehan Daruvala also finished on the podium. The Indian’s achievement is all the more interesting as he started from 14th position. Brazilian Drugovich is also the new championship leader.

The F2 series continues next month at Imola, Italy, where F3 will be joined again by Roman Stanek.
