Devils keep a strong team of youngsters together, Detroit relies on experience
New Jersey made it to the playoffs last season after a long wait, first knocking out the New York Rangers in a tight series, then falling to the Carolina Hurricanes. The lineup has undergone only minor changes over the summer.
The Czech goalie Vitek Vaněček remains in the crease and should be the number one goalie. He will be backed up by the talented Swiss Akira Schmid.
Defensively, the Devils rely most on Dougie Hamilton, who also plays great in the offensive zone, with John Marino and Jonas Siegenthaler. Luke Hughes has also earned his spot in the starting lineup during training camp. On the other hand, Simon Nemec will start the season in the AHL.
The Devils’ offensive lineup must be scary for all defensemen – Jack Hughes, Ondrej Palat, Timo Meier, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt and summer signing Tyler Toffoli.
In addition to the experienced James Reimer, Ville Husso and Alex Lyon will be fighting for a spot in Detroit’s net. Moritz Seider is expected to shine again on defense, with the likes of Jake Walman and Ben Chiarot skating around him.
The Red Wings offense will not have as many young stars as the Devils. Joe Veleno and Lucas Raymond should shine, with Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin and David Perron looking after them.
Betting tips
New Jersey has won all seven games played in preparation, posting a record of 30:14. Detroit has played eight preparation games, winning five times and losing three times by a score of 29:22.
The Devils are aiming for the highest standards this year, so it is not surprising that they will be the favorite in this duel at odds of 1.69. Both teams have been firing in preparation, so either team could score at least twice at odds of 1.41.
Jack Hughes set an organization record last year with 99 points and added 11 more in the playoffs. He should be one of the most dangerous again this year. We have odds of 1.96 on him getting two points. His younger brother on defense, Luke, can also score, and we have odds of 2.1 for his point.
Betting Tip: Jack Hughes scores and New Jersey wins
