The fifth round of the third edition of the UEFA Nations League is underway and the Hungarians are once again a little closer to an amazing playoff run. This time they won in Germany. How did the other teams fare?
In League A, another valuable scalp in the group of death was scored by the Hungarians. With a 17th minute goal, they won in Germany and put them out of the relegation playoffs. At the same time, the Italians took advantage of England’s woes at home, beating them 1-0.
In the table, this means that the Italians must win in Hungary in the last round, otherwise the Hungarians will qualify for the play-offs. The Germans and the English have nothing to play for anymore, as England are already assured of relegation. The Germans will finish second at best.
Even in League B, the bread was breaking. Bosnia and Herzegovina won their home match against Montenegro for the top spot in the table 1:0. The Finns could have cut off the Romanians on home soil, but only drew with them 1:1.
Bosnia thus secured the first place and a return to the league elite, the other three teams will fight for salvation. Romania must beat Bosnia, ideally by the biggest goal difference, while Montenegro only need a draw to stay in the league.
Georgia secured a sensational promotion to the B League with a 2-0 home win over Macedonia, while the struggling Bulgarians secured their salvation with a 5-1 win over Gibraltar. Spartan Martin Minchev also came into the game in the second half.
Slovácko midfielder Vasilij Sinyavski came off the bench for Estonia and helped them to a 2-1 triumph over Malta. The win also guarantees Estonia’s promotion to Performance Group C, although they still have to play San Marino.
