Seven matches of the Nations League group stage were played on Friday, including the Slovaks. The biggest surprises were clearly in the A-League, where both Belgium and the winner of the last edition – France – lost.
The French suffered a surprising defeat at the start of the competition, losing 1:2 to Denmark thanks to two goals from Andreas Cornelius. Not even a goal from Karim Benzema was enough and the Danes confirmed that they are a force to be reckoned with in Qatar.
In a match played in parallel, the Austrians also surprisingly beat the Croatians 3:0 to top the table. Three goals in the space of fifteen minutes decided the match, the Balkan favourites could not answer, also because Luka Modric started on the bench.
Belgium fell ignominiously at home to the Netherlands 1:4, Wales lost to Poland 1:2 two days ago in the same group, not even a Johnny Williams goal was enough.
In any case, the key match of this meeting for the Northmen will be the clash with Ukraine for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. At home in Cardiff, they will welcome a team that is not only playing for participation in the tournament, but also for hope for their own people.
In League C, the Slovaks were successful, winning by the narrowest of margins (1:0) against Belarus thanks to Tomas Suslov. Kazakhstan topped their group, beating Azerbaijan 3:0.
In the lowest league, the favoured Latvia succeeded in crushing Andorra 3:0 and topping the group, while Moldova scored three valuable points in their match against Liechtenstein.
