Nasty haircut: Vinícius posted a video of the racist insults he had to endure
On the one hand, it is crazy that this has to be addressed again, on the other hand, it is good that this time it has really taken off in a big way and there is hope that this topic will end once and for all. The racism against Vinícius in Spain is crossing all boundaries and the Brazilian posted a video of everything he had to endure.
This is the ninth time this has happened. Nine times La Liga has had to report racist behaviour by fans towards Vinícius, a couple of times the culprits have been found and punished, but nothing has happened and the hatred towards the Brazilian star continues.
Only this time, after the Valencia game, patience ran out and a huge hype was triggered. The world’s big stars like Mbappé, Neymar, Leão, Hakimi, Mahrez, Walker, Sancho, Saka and many other players have spoken out in support of Vinícius, as well as legends like Ronaldo Nazário, Kaká and Rio Ferdinand, who has gone to great lengths to demand the resignation of La Liga boss Javier Tebas.
The latter, in fact, more or less put the blame on Vinícius in his statement, saying that instead of addressing racism, La Liga’s hands are tied and Vinícius had better inquire what La Liga can do and that he didn’t show up for any of the meetings that were arranged.
This didn’t sit well with the head of the Spanish federation, Luis Rubiales, who at a press conference apologised to Vinícius and the whole of Brazil and asked that Tebas and his ill-advised words not be taken seriously.
And the solution to racism? It looks like it’s going to get hotter. FIFA president Gianni Infantino stood up for Vinícius in a statement and said that one way to address the racism is to stop the match and if the racism is repeated, the match will be called off in favour of the aggrieved team.
Disgusting insults
And indeed this rule needs to be implemented because the situation with the young Brazilian is already unbearable. The São Gonçalo native has posted on Instagram some of the racist insults he has had to face this season.
The video starts with a view of Mestalla, Valencia’s stadium. “Look at the stands, my God,” says the filmmaker, as the stadium chants “Mono” or “monkey ” .
The video then cuts to September 2022, before the derby with Atlético Madrid, when the Rojiblancos fans chant “Vinícius eres un mono”.
It continues with scenes from Valladolid in late 2022, when Vinícius walks past the home stands after a substitution. “Fucking nigger! ” shouts a fan. “Fucking nigger! ” adds another. Then a large section of the sector starts doing monkey screams.
In the Mallorca game in February, a fan tells him to go and pick bananas. And the monkey screams continue. Another sketch is from the Camp Nou in Barcelona, where the home crowd chant “Vinícius die”.
Moving on to the last game against Valencia, where the home fans are already chanting “Vinícius you’re a monkey” as the Real Madrid bus arrives.
The video ends with a shot of a banner of Atlético Madrid fans saying that they hate Real and hanging a black figure with a Vinícius jersey. “It’s not football, it’s inhuman,” the Brazilian added at the end of his caption to the video.
