Rafael Nadal managed his first Wimbledon match in 3 years. The unpredictable duel with Argentine Francisco Cerundolo had a minor plot, but the Spaniard counted on it.
Nadal dominated the first set 6-4, winning the second set 6-3. But after that, things started to happen. Cerundolo first lost his serve, but then broke Nadal twice and took the third set 6-3.
In the fourth set, Cerundolo got another break and led 3-1 and then 4-2, setting up a big drama. But the 23-year-old Argentine didn’t stop in his head and didn’t make another game. Nadal took four games in a row in style to win the fourth set 6-4.
“It was a tough match, but I expected it because I haven’t played on grass for 3 years and Fran played great. The positive thing is that I finished the match on a high level. It was a positive match for me, but I have to improve a lot,” Nadal said after the match.
“I almost don’t remember what the grass is like. Today the wind was blowing, it was cold, the ball is very heavy, it’s faster, it’s not long over the net. It was not easy to play. But every win helps, I spent a lot of time on the court and I hope all this helps,” added the Spanish tennis player.
41. aTP rankings player Cerundolo was not the easiest player to get started. However, a much weaker opponent on paper should await Nadal in the second round, where he will face 32-year-old Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis, who is as high as 106th in the rankings.
Thus, the most successful tennis player in history will take the next match on Thursday, June 30 at 12 noon.
