The whole of Spain is devouring the news about the state of Rafael Nadal’s leg. This topic is even more discussed than the 14th Roland Garros title the Spaniard won on Sunday. Nadal’s chronic injury is brought to you by Dr. Raúl Ramos.
Nadal just dominated his 14th Roland Garros, winning his 22nd Grand Slam title and cementing his position as the most successful tennis player in history. Winning another trophy is already valuable, but even more so given his health.
In fact, the Spanish fighter suffers from a chronic leg condition called Müller-Weiss syndrome. This degenerative disease causes a deformity of one of the bones in the middle part of the foot and causes him enormous pain.
He had to go into every match with a numb foot, which he subsequently could not feel. After arriving at the hotel, he couldn’t even walk afterwards. Despite this, he was unbeatable and knocked out, for example, the world number one Novak Djokovic.
After the final, he said that he could not go on like this and another solution had to be found. Playing under anaesthetic injections is not a long-term solution.
Inhuman Nadal
For Radio MARCA, Nadal’s chronic illness is explained by podiatry expert Raúl Ramos.
“Nadal’s bone alteration started to develop in childhood, but he suffers from it in adulthood. This changes the whole biomechanics of the foot, the bone is the apex of the internal arch of the foot, which causes great pain,” explains Ramos.
Nadal himself said he will undergo radiofrequency injections, which should bring some relief and could work for a longer period of time.
“Radiofrequency consists of a procedure with a needle that increases the temperature by about half. It pulsates and increases. With the first or second treatment, you completely burn the nerve and numb the area,” explains the expert.
The whole of Spain is amazed at how Nadal can play, let alone win, with such an injury. But El toro is a warrior who sometimes leaves you wondering.
“I have patients who have the same injury as Rafa and it affects them a lot in everyday life. And they’re not professional athletes! Because of that, what Rafa is doing with this disease is inexplicable and inhuman,” says Ramos, a native of Manacor.
