Former Slavic striker Petar Musa was looking forward to his first appearance for the Croatian national team when coach Zlatko Dalić nominated him for the Nations League matches against Austria and France. However, the joy of his first start for his country was taken away by a positive finding for coronavirus.
Petar Musa and another called-up striker Marko Livaja of Hajduk Split tested positive for coronavirus at the Croatian national team meeting in Osijek before the Nations League matches against Austria and France.
Both were withdrawn from the squad for health reasons. Musa’s next test was already negative and he would have been able to make the second match, but the football load was out of the question.
“Petar felt very weak, it’s just a hit to the body,” said his player agent Milan Martinovic. “At the same time, coach Dalić did not hide the fact that he wanted to give him a chance, which would have been a great opportunity for Petar, also considering the World Cup in Qatar in November,” Martinović added.
Without their two promising strikers, the Croats lost 0:3 at home to Austria and then drew 1:1 with France in the rematch of the 2018 World Cup final, equalizing seven minutes before the end of the match from a penalty kick.
The lanky striker will have to wait a while for his debut in the national team jersey. But he certainly doesn’t have to mourn, as he recently made the biggest transfer of his career.
He moved from Boavista to Benfica Lisbon, where he will reunite with former Slavic player Alexander Bach or former Spartan Mihailo Ristic. All three arrived identically this summer.
