Probably nobody in the world does it better than Benfica Lisbon. Buy young unknown players for a few million, or nurture their own footballers and then sell them to giants for big money.
Benfica’s biggest masterstroke was in the summer of 2019, when they sold the offspring of João Félix, who played just one season in the Ajax, to Atlético for €127 million. The sale of Enzo Fernandez was also luxurious, as he arrived in the summer of 2022 for €44 million, and six months later he left for Chelsea for €121 million.
The third fantastic deal was Darwin Núñez, who arrived in the summer of 2020 for 34 million euros, moving to Liverpool last summer for 80 million euros. And Benfica’s reaction? It didn’t bring in any expensive replacements, it simply gave more space to the offspring of Goncalo Ramos.
And he repaid the trust handsomely, netting 27 goals and adding 5 assists for Benfica in all competitions during the season. But he raised his price tag the most at the World Cup in Qatar.
There, although he started as a substitute, he only played 9 and 3 minutes in the group stage. In the eighth-final against Switzerland, however, Fernando Santos shocked the world by benching captain Cristiano Ronaldo and sending the largely unknown Goncalo Ramos in his place.
but the 21-year-old striker handled the pressure superbly, demolishing the Swiss with a hat-trick and securing Portugal’s progress to the quarter-finals. Since then, he has been monitored by all the big clubs.
But the transfer finally comes only now in the summer. According to Fabrizio Romano, PSG will buy Ramos for 80 million euros. The entire transfer should be completed by the end of the week, the Portuguese will sign a contract until 2028.
This could open up space at the top of the attack for Petar Musa. The ex-Slavic striker has often replaced Ramos and maybe he will be the next to get more space.
