Former world number one Garbine Muguruza has announced her withdrawal from the 1,000-player tournament in Madrid. The reason is a thigh injury on her left leg. She has therefore delayed the start of the clay court season.

Former world number one Garbine Muguruza announced on Thursday that she is withdrawing from the tournament in Madrid, delaying the start of the clay court season.

“We have been working hard to recover and be fine for the tournament,” she reasoned in an interview with Tennis.

“I came a week early to adjust because I really wanted to do well this year in Madrid, at home and in front of my fans, ” the Venezuelan-Spanish tennis player added.

She had a great start to the 2021 season. She won her eighth triumph at the Dubai tournament.

And earlier this week, she was optimistic, hoping to make an appearance in front of the Spanish fans. But a lingering thigh injury on her left leg kept her out of the tournament.

Instead, Danka Kovinic was given the chance to play, but she didn’t take advantage of the opportunity and lost 0:2 in sets to American Sloane Stephens.
