On Saturday at 3 p.m., Karolína Muchová entered her first Grand Slam final. However, she did not achieve the triumph from Roland Garros, as she lost to Iga Świąteková after almost three hours of drama 1: 2 sets. The current world number one was able to defend her victory at the famous Parisian event last year.
The native of Olomouc defeated Maria Sakkari, Nadia Podoroska, Irina-Camelia Begu, Elina Avanesianova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Aryna Sabalenka in the previous round of the tournament.
The Warsaw-born Pole made it through to the final round over Cristina Bucșova, Claire Liu, Wang Xin-yu, Lesya Curenko, Cori Gauff and Beatriz Haddad Maia.
The two finalists of this year’s French Open have clashed once before on the WTA circuit. Four years ago, when Świąteková’s career among adults was just beginning, the Moravian tennis player, four years older than her, won on clay in Prague. The match ended 4::6, 6::1 and 6::4.
The star of Polish tennis in a noticeable wind on Philippe Chatrier’s court achieved a fast break thanks to her successful returns at the beginning of the duel for the title. 43. so the world number one was soon down 0::3.
In the following period Muchova helped herself to score several points with her varied play, but at the same time she did not avoid a number of unforced errors. Because of this, she was unable to reverse the unfavourable situation and lost her serve again. She therefore lost the opening set 2:6 after three quarters of an hour.
The Moravian tennis player did not hold her serve at the beginning of the second act either, but this time she managed to level the match at 3:3. At 5::4 she even served to win the set, but did not take the opportunity.
Two games later, however, she had the same opportunity. And in this case Muchova was successful, as she scored a partial win 7::5 after converting the third set point and, most importantly, tied the set at 1::1.
This encouraged her towards the start of the deciding set, which she opened with a break. However, Świąteková responded and soon evened the pace. Muchová later lost a key serve at a critical stage of the match also due to a double fault and lost 4::6.
The only winners of women’s singles at Roland Garros from our country remain two tennis players. Hana Mandlíková triumphed in 1981, followed by Barbora Krejčíková in the previous year’s edition.
Świąteková became the French Open champion for the third time, having done so in 2020 and 2022. In total, she has won the Grand Slam title four times, having also dominated the US Open last year.
