Tomáš Souček is having his lowest goal scoring season since his move to England. Fans and pundits alike have often criticised coach David Moyes for not giving him a rest. However, the Czech midfielder did get a break during the World Cup. The West Ham coach hopes to see him back at his best.
It was the beginning of 2020 when West Ham brought in midfielder Tomáš Souček on loan from Slavia Prague. He worked his way into the starting line-up fairly quickly and earned himself a permanent transfer.
In the very first season that the former Slavia captain played for the Hammers as a whole, his performances ranked him among the best players in the famous Premier League. He even missed out on a nomination for the best player of the year award.
And there was a reason for that. Soucek not only played great at his position, but as a defensive midfielder he scored 10 goals. This took its toll, however, as the Havlíčkův Brod native attracted attention and huge expectations.
He hasn’t managed to live up to them yet. In the next season he scored only five goals, and there was already talk about whether he could replicate his fantastic first year. And he’s no better in the current one.
Moyes wants more goals from Soucek
So far, he has only netted once and it is clear from his performances that his fitness isn’t bottomless either. Fans and pundits alike have called for him to be given a rest. However, that has not been happening. But now it was the World Cup and Soucek could concentrate on his recovery.
“I believe that Tomas benefited from the break. In the preparatory matches he performed very well. It is important for us that he returns to his high standard. After joining the club he adapted to the league very quickly. He scored a lot of goals. We have relied on him a lot and we need him back at his best,” coach David Moyes told Canal+ Sport.
” We are working on getting him into higher positions in the penalty area. We have to work on that and believe that he will break the bad luck. The key is for him to be in the penalty area more and get more finishing opportunities.”
