AS Roma as Italian midget
The Coppa Italia quarter-final between home side Inter Milan and AS Roma, led by Portuguese tactician José Mourinho, was played on Tuesday night. The visitors from Rome took home a two-goal defeat after a troubled performance, taking only one shot on target against their opponents.
The Portuguese tactician not only blamed his players for the result at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, but was furious with his team’s performance in particular. After the match, things were very heated in the visitors’ dressing room, according to Corriere dello Sport. The Portuguese manager blamed his players mainly for playing against stronger teams without enough confidence.
After all, AS Roma didn’t have bad results in the 2022 calendar year, but they always failed against higher ranked clubs. At the beginning of January, they lost 3-1 to AC at the San Siro in Milan. The next game, it succumbed 3: 4 at home to Juventus and on Tuesday, in the aforementioned match, it fell short to Inter Milan.
“I want to know why you behaved like a small team,” a furious Mourinho raged, according to Corriere dello Sport. According to the manager, the referees and the opposition then treated his team with the same standard.
Mourinho: “You have no balls.”
While he acknowledged the strength of the opposition, the coach is annoyed by the fact that instead of going on the pitch to fight with their more famous opponents, the players appeared rather intimidated in front of their Milan opponents. He blamed the players in particular for their lack of personality and courage on the ball.
“The worst thing for a guy is not to have balls,” the Portuguese strategist did not mince words. “You’d better go play Serie C, where you won’t face the champions, you won’t play in the best stadiums and there won’t be so much pressure on you,” Mourinho finished with fury.
Mourinho vs. the Real Madrid cab
Jose Mourinho is known for his explosiveness and for not going far to clash with his players when he feels they are not putting their whole heart into a match. Iker Casillas, the Real Madrid star who was cut from the starting eleven from the Portuguese’s time as manager of the White Ballet, could tell a story. The Spanish giant’s divided cabinet was much in the media at the time.
AS Roma, after being knocked out of the Italian Cup, are fighting for a place in the Serie A cups so far unsuccessfully. They are only seventh in the league table, which is certainly disappointing not only for the fans of the Roman club. Let’s see how Mourinho can motivate his players further this season.
