Europa League
Mourinho lashed out at the referee after the loss: He looked like a Spaniard, Lamela shouldn’t have finished. I’m prouder than ever. Will he stay in Rome?
Bitter pill. José Mourinho lost a final match for the first time in his career. Sevilla won the Europa League for the seventh time. But the AS Roma coach had plenty to say after the game. Rather unsurprisingly, he took a swipe at the referees.

Sevilla still reigns supreme in the Europa League. It has won its seventh trophy and has never lost a final in this competition. But it was a drama that came down to penalties. Moreover, there were some controversial moments.
We can mention the unforgiven hand of one of Sevilla’s defenders in the penalty area, after which AS Roma could have played a penalty, or the interesting distribution of cards when, for example, Erik Lamela finished without a single yellow card despite several hard tackles.
The main referee, Englishman Anthony Taylor, therefore faced criticism from both the public and the Italian team’s coach.
“We are extremely tired. Killed by the feeling that we lost unfairly. It was an intense game with a referee who looked like a Spaniard. The unfairness is shown by the fact that Lamela should have had a second yellow but didn’t get it and then converted the penalty,” Football-Italia quotes Jose Mourinho as saying.
Mourinho lost his first ever final: “We are all sad and disappointed. There were many questionable incidents. I have won five European finals, I lost this one, but I come home prouder than ever. The boys gave it their all.”
Even after the game, Mourinho was asked what his future holds. He refused to leave for Paris, instead looking forward to his holiday, which starts on Monday. But he also said he cannot objectively say that he will stay in Rome.
He is still under contract at the club for one more year. It is acknowledged by the management and the fans. He is now said to be not in contact with any other team.
