Will famous strategist José Mourinho stay at AS Roma? That was one of the questions journalists asked the Portuguese coach after losing the Europa League final against Sevilla. His answer was unequivocal.
European Cup finals specialist José Mourinho had to swallow a very bitter pill on Wednesday night in the form of a penalty shootout defeat. For once again, Sevilla reached the top of the Europa League.
The Giallorossi took the lead first when Paulo Dybala opened the scoring in the 35th minute. However, defender Gianluca Mancini scored his own goal in the second half. No more goals were scored until the end of normal time.
The winner was not decided by extra time, but by penalty kicks, in which the Spanish team was more successful.
Mourinho took a swipe at the referees at the post-match press conference, but in addition answered questions from journalists about his future in Rome. He sent a clear message to AS owners through his response.
“I want to stay, but my players deserve more. And I deserve more. I want to fight for more.I’m a little tired of being a coach, a head of communication, a face that says we’ve been robbed. I’m a little tired of being in charge of so much,” said Mourinho, whose words were also quoted by Football Italia.
“I want to stay with the current conditions so I can give more to the team. We are not in the Champions League next season and that is ironically good news because we are not yet a team built for the Champions League,” the AS coach made clear.
As Mourinho has already stated, the Roman side are not currently in a position in Serie A that would ensure their participation in the Champions League.
On the contrary, AS are currently only sixth with 60 points, and they still have to fight for Europa League participation.
Although it is only one point behind Atalanta in fifth, it is also only one point behind Juventus in seventh. AS must win at home against Spezia in the last round to avoid having to look at the results of their opponents.
“We have to win on Sunday to qualify for the Europa League. We want to return to European competitions. I hope the referee stays in the Champions League and just does the same stupid things he did today and leaves us alone in the Europa League,” Mourinho added.
