Formula 1 is not exactly experiencing a rosy period in terms of the diversity of names and teams at the top of the championship. Nevertheless, the championship continues to attract new brands into its fold. After the announcement of Ford or Audi, American General Motors announces its arrival in the queen of motorsport starting in 2028 through the name Cadillac. The carmaker will expand its range of engine suppliers from six to seven at that point. This number will appear in F1 for the first time since the 2006 season.
A few days before the start of Formula 1’s return to Las Vegas, the American corporation General Motors announced its registration as a powertrain manufacturer in the championship starting in the 2028 season, following an agreement with the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
The news follows the month-old announcement of the famous Andretti name entering Formula 1 as the eleventh team. It also introduces General Motors and its Cadillac division as the next in a line of new engine suppliers alongside Ford, Audi and Honda. This trio will show up in the championship two years early.
“We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 stable will be powered by a General Motors powertrain,” GM President Mark Reuss said in an official press release.
“With our deep engineering and racing experience, we are confident that we will develop a successful powertrain for the series and be a true factory team for Andretti Cadillac.”
As racefans.net says in its report, Cadillac intends to enter F1 only in conjunction with Andretti under the Andretti Global brand. However, the American stable with a far-reaching tradition in the motorsport world is in talks with commercial rights holders.
Which has long approached the question of an eleventh team with great reserve. Formula One is currently experiencing the overwhelming dominance of Max Verstappen and Red Bull. However, the entry of General Motors and Cadillac means that, despite this issue, the big car companies remain interested in it and its future development.
Indeed, with the 2026 season F1 will begin a new era with greener powertrains, the aim of which, apart from moving towards greater sustainability, is precisely to attract those interested in these technologies.
General Motors will become the seventh different engine supplier in F1. The queen of motorsport could last boast this number in 2006. Back then, teams in the championship received power units from Ferrari, Renault, Honda, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota and Cosworth.
