More space for Vydra? No, Burnley brought in an experienced Bundesliga goal scorer
The clear leader in the Burnley attack for several years has been Chris Wood. Matej Vydra has never been able to push him out of the lineup. But Wood is now a Newcastle player, which could mean more space for the Czech striker. But it probably won’t happen, because the English team brought an interesting reinforcement.
Chris Wood has been a key part of Burnley since the summer of 2017, and one of the main reasons why the modest English outfit managed to stay in the Premier League. With the exception of the current season, he has always reached at least 10 league goals.
He fitted in perfectly with Burnley’s game and was a huge asset to the team. It wasn’t too surprising that Matej Vydra didn’t get as much space in the lineup. It could be said that the former Derby or Baník Ostrava player doesn’t fit into the team very well.
He could have left before this season, but he decided to accept the offer of a one-year contract extension, which will expire after the current season. Meanwhile, the aforementioned Wood left in the winter and was acquired by Newcastle United.
It seemed to be a good chance for Vydra to get more space to prove himself. Immediately in the first game after Wood’s departure, the Czech striker played the full 90 minutes for the first time since November, managing the whole game against Arsenal, which ended in a goalless draw.
But Burnley clearly don’t want to rely on Vydra. The 29-year-old Dutchman Wout Weghorst is the new signing of the English club.
Weghorst has long been one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga, not only scoring goals in a Wolfsburg jersey, but also setting them up quite extensively. In 144 competitive matches he scored 77 goals and added 29 assists.
Moreover, he should fit in better with Burnley’s style of play. Therefore, Vydra probably won’t get too many opportunities to attract potential suitors for his services either.
At 29 years old, the Czech striker could be a much more highly regarded footballer.
