Ferland Mendy didn’t help himself again. Moreover, after a very poor performance in the friendly against Barcelona, it was revealed that he was injured again. This is his twelfth injury since joining Real Madrid.
In the summer of 2019, Real Madrid paid 48 million euros for him. He was supposed to be the replacement for Marcelo, but Ferland Mendy is a bit of a different type of left-back.
In terms of defensive performance, he’s doing great. He is fast and incredibly strong. His teammates describe him as a machine that you can’t even get around in training. But unfortunately, that’s more or less where his strengths end.
Mendy’s offensive support is pitiful. His center accuracy is poor, his assists an anomaly. In the last three league seasons, he has only assisted two goals. Compared to Marcelo, who collected roughly 10 assists per season in his prime, there is a significant drop off.
Add to that the injuries. Mendy has been a constant casualty, currently picking up his twelfth injury since joining Real Madrid. Part of the problem is the fact that these are always longer term injuries.
He missed the vast majority of the spring, first missing from late January to March due to a thigh injury, playing half an hour upon his return, and then wandering off again due to a calf injury until mid-May, when Real Madrid had nothing left to play for.
That left midfielder Eduardo Camavinga or stopper Nacho to start at left-back. Real Madrid had to look for a replacement, and brought in offspring Fran García from Rayo Vallecano.
The two were supposed to battle it out for the number one position at left-back, but the Frenchman made it a lot easier for the returnee. He and García regularly switched halves in preparation, but in the third game Mendy couldn’t last, he injured a muscle and will be out for at least a month.
This is his twelfth injury in four years at Real. And the club’s management is running out of patience. An offer from Saudi Arabia was due to arrive during July, but negotiations ultimately fell through. But no one could be surprised if Real wanted to get rid of Mendy.
